2006 Cubs: No Hustle? No Problem!
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 13 December 2006

Paul Sullivan writes an entertaining year-end story on the dysfunction junction that was the 2006 Chicago Cubs. The notebook-clearing piece includes this high(low)light:

Best interview: While talking with (Dusty) Baker in July in the Cubs dugout in Milwaukee, he began discussing his reputation in his family for "jacking" up the kids who misbehave. So I asked him why he doesn't "jack up" Ramirez for not running hard. "I have jacked up Aramis," Baker protested. Then why is he still not running hard to first base? "He's better than he was, ain't he?" Baker replied. "This [guy] has been doing this for a long time. OK?" Baker then got up and made a dramatic exit, putting an exclamation mark on the interview.

This explains much. Aramis didn't have to hustle because he had never hustled. Jacque Jones didn't have to run the bases well because he had never run them well. The defense didn't have to play good defense because it had never played good defense.

In short, changing behaviors and teaching fundamental baseball would have required someone to change them and teach them. Namely, a highly paid manager. Too bad there wasn't one of those around last year (though he is a very nice man).
