The Rotation Stinks, But ...
Written by wrigleyville

There is near panic in some corners of the message board world, as fans are getting increasingly agitated that the Cubs have yet to sign Jason Schmidt, Barry Zito, or Sandy Koufax. The fear is that the Cubs will go into 2007 with a rotation of Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Sean Marshall, Rich Hill, and Mark Prior and/or Wade Miller. As Maddog - who is not among those who panic - wrote at the Chicago National League Ball Club blog, "That rotation sure sucks." Yes, it does. But would it doom the Cubs for 2007? Not necessarily, although Cub Nation would rest much easier with Schmidt as the No. 2 starter. But consider: In a remarkably weak Central Division (and National League as a whole), the Cubs have the bats and just enough arms to remain competitive into the summer. If they are at .500 in mid-July, there is no reason to believe that they would not be within five or six games of the wild card - if not the division - lead. Assuming they are within striking distance, they could trade for pitching at the deadline to make a playoff push. That would allow them to not overpay for quality pitchers (Zito, Schmidt) or not-so-quality pitchers (Meche), while still strengthening the rotation leading into August and September. Then again, they could sign Schmidt tomorrow and the Cubs would have among the best 1-2 combinations in the majors. Or the rotation could be so bad that the Cubs are fighting it out with the Pirates again. Stay tuned... UPDATE: The Trib reports in tomorrow's paper that the Cubs are the leaders for Lilly's services and remain in the race for Schmidt and Meche.
