Some baseball executives are "stunned" by the contract the Cubs gave Alfonso Soriano, according to Phil Rogers in the Trib on Tuesday. And the most critical ones are anonymous, of course: "If he's a foundation piece, why has he changed teams so much?" asked the executive. "He's a .280 lifetime hitter, a liability in the field and he's 31 years old [in January]. I don't understand it myself." Hmm, bitter much? Let's see, the Yankees traded Soriano to the Rangers for Alex Rodriguez. Pretty good reason there. The Rangers then traded him to the Nationals because he was going into his free agency year. And the Nationals lost him because they couldn't pay $136 million. Speaking of spending money, there's more speculation on Mark Cuban in Rogers' story. "At least one potential purchaser has gone strangely silent. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, a dot-com billionaire, acknowledged interest in purchasing the team last summer but said he had been told it was not for sale. Asked what he thought about its attractiveness, he declined to answer, saying he would not "want to drive up the value."Cuban has declined to return recent e-mails about the Cubs." I think Michael Barrett would enjoy an entertainment center in his Wrigley locker.
