OK, the Cubs signed Alfonso Soriano today. Eight years, $136 million. What does that mean? It means the Chicago Cubs have won me back, four short months after I swore them off after sitting through three wretched games in the D.C. heat in which the also lousy Washington Nationals swept the Cubs (while Soriano was 7 of 13 for the series - including 4 of 5 in Game 2). Quite simply, I had given up. Why? Because they had given up. Because we were less than three years removed from the glorious September and October of 2003, when every Cub pitch mattered and every at-bat was thrilling. And, most of all, because the Chicago Cubs - for the first time in my 35 years - had become unlikeable. They didn't hustle. They didn't play defense. They didn't even seem to like each other, let alone the best fans in baseball. The disillusionment started in 2004, when Dusty allowed the team to be more concerned with the Evil Stoney and Chip than winning games. Ultimately, the team fulfilled its destiny by running the broadcasters out of town while falling short of the playoffs. The disappointment only grew worse in 2005, when they stumbled to a 79-83 record, and 2006, when they were, well, lousy. So I gave up that day at RFK and didn't watch another game the rest of the year. But I'm back. By overpaying a third baseman who has yet to run out a fly or ground ball, by re-signing two broken pitchers, by signing a 31-year-old second baseman who may have peaked last year, by re-signing a backup catcher, by trading for more middle relief, and most of all by signing one of the most exciting players in baseball ... the Chicago Cubs have won me over. And it only cost them $232 million or so. At least I'm not cheap. Yes, they need pitching. Zambrano, Hill, Marshall, Prior and Miller amount to about 2.5 pitchers at this point. But they clearly are going after some medium-named starters in the coming weeks - an approach that worked well for the Cardinals this year with an everyday lineup significantly shakier than the '07 Cubs in a weak Central Division. So, I've created this site to 1. keep me focused on the Cubs throughout 2007, and 2. chronicle what could be the greatest year in baseball history - or the 99th disappointing year in a row. Either way, I plan to be here through October.
