Odd Soriano Story
Written by wrigleyville
Saturday, 25 November 2006
The New York Times has another story in Sunday's paper dumping cold water on the Alfonso Soriano signing, saying he's not as good as his 2006 numbers indicate and he doesn't get on base enough - a well known problem for the Cubs. To illustrate the point, reporter Jonah Keri writes: "The biggest flaw in Soriano’s game is the same one that plagued the Cubs in 2006: an inability to get on base. The Cubs posted a .319 on-base percentage last season, worst in the National League. Soriano’s career on-base percentage is .325; by comparison, Aaron Guiel, a career bench player who will have to fight for even a fringe job next season, has a .322 mark. Strip out intentional walks, and Soriano’s career number falls to .320. Soriano’s on-base percentage improved to .351 in 2006 (.337 minus intentional walks)." Why would you strip out the intentional walks? Isn't that getting on base and part of an indication of a player's value? For example, Barry Bonds' OBP would plummet. But that doesn't mean he wasn't on base after those at bats. Just odd. I'm not quibling with the premise of the story, but this seems to be an example of the Times using selective statistics to prove its point - not that that ever happens in the newspaper of record.
