Sandberg vs. Trammell

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press wrote the following in a story posted this evening: "(Alan) Trammell's numbers compare favorably with those of Ryne Sandberg, the longtime Chicago Cubs second baseman who entered the Hall in 2005. Sandberg, though, stood out from his peers at second base because of his power production." Those are fighting words around Wrigleyville, so it was time for a quick trip to baseball-reference.com: Sandberg: .285 career average, 2,386 hits, 282 home runs, 1,061 RBI, .344 obp, .452 slug, one MVP (1984). Trammell: .285, 2,365 hits, 185 home runs, 1,003 RBI, .352 obp, .415 slug. They were much closer than expected. Eerily close, actually. But it still isn't accurate to say "Trammell's numbers compare favorably" with Ryno's, unless by "numbers" you mean on-base percentage. That's not likely what Morosi meant.
