Spending Spree: Should Cubs Fans Care Why?

On The Chicago Sports Review, Chris Sprow reacts to the Alfonso Soriano signing by posing four questions about the motivations of the recent Cubs spending spree: "One: is this just an organizational reaction to frustration? Two: If so, is it the proper one? Three: Are the sale rumors supported by the spending? And four: How should you feel?" Let's take them one at a time. One: Is this just an organizational reaction to frustration? Partly, yes. As noted below, the Cubs lost gallons of fans last season when they put a lackluster product on the field and more or less gave up on the season less than halfway through. Those empty seats in the last month of the season sent a message: Ante up or else. As the Bo obituaries noted, the Big House in Ann Arbor was far from full before he showed up and made them a winner. Only a true blue lover of ivy could sit through any more seasons of a lineup that regularly included Phil Nevin, Neifi Perez and John Mabry - all in the same game. Two: If so, is it the proper one? That is a question on which Cubs fans disagree - to a point. But even those who support building from the ground up must feel a pang of excitement at the thought of seeing Soriano bat in front of D.Lee and Aramis every day. Sure, they could have rededicated themselves to scouting, building the system and bringing up homegrown players. But Jim Hendry doesn't have that kind of time, and the two approaches aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Look at the homegrown players on the Yankees roster: Jeter, Williams, Cano, and Posada. Three: Are the sale rumors supported by the spending? The sale rumors are part of a bigger Tribune Company issue, but this certainly doesn't hurt the value of the team... Four: How should you feel? Should? I don't know. How do I feel? Happy. Very happy.
