Cubs To Play 5 Outfielders - At Once

Manager Lou Piniella announced Monday that the Chicago Cubs will play with five outfielders the rest of the season - leaving only Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to cover the entire infield.

"Look, Jim (Hendry) stuck me with this mess, so I'm going to have to make the best of it," Piniella said before the game against the Brewers. "If they don't like it, then they had better trade one of them for a reliever who can get people out."

The Cubs will play different formations in the outfield, depending on the batter. When power hitters are up, they will play five across. When contact hitters are up, they'll play three deep and two shallow - in the shape of a W. When David Eckstein is up, they'll play two deep and three shallow - in the shape of an M.

When Wade Miller pitches, Matt Murton will come to the infield and play pitcher's helper.

"I understand that it looks goofy, but I don't care," Piniella said. "The best players are going to play every day, so we're going with five outfielders - and four are left fielders, so we'll have to figure that out. It's not like Ronny (Cedeno) can get anyone out anyway, and we'll find a way to play (Mark) DeRosa and (Ryan) Theriot next season."

Felix Pie will play center field, Alfonso Soriano will play left field, Jacque Jones will play center left field, Matt Murton will play right center left field, and Cliff Floyd will play right left field.

"We just do what Lou tells us," said one player who spoke on the condition his name not be used "because Lou is crazy."
