Early Season Trends In Wrigleyville
Written by wrigleyville
Friday, 06 April 2007
We at Wrigleyville23 like to be the first to spot a trend. We're trendspotters, if you will. And these are some of the early trends we're spotting after 2/81 of the season, which is definitely a representative sample:

Guys who signed pretty big new contracts are earning their money. Mark DeRosa has two home runs, with a .462 average - on pace for 80-plus homers and a .462 average. Aramis Ramirez is batting .500 - and on pace to bat .500. Cliff Floyd is batting .375 - on pace to bat .375. Ted Lilly is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA - on pace for 30-plus wins and a 1.29 ERA. Jason Marquis is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA - on pace for zero wins and a 1.50 ERA.

Guys who signed really big new contracts are not earning their money. Alfonso Soriano is batting .222, with no home runs, one walk and three strike outs. He's on a pace to hit zero home runs.

Guys playing for $100 million contracts are not doing so well. Carlos Zambrano is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA - on pace for 30-plus losses and a 9.00 ERA. Scott Eyre has an 18.00 ERA - on pace, well you get the picture.

For those of you who say Ted Lilly won't win 30-plus games or Mark DeRosa won't hit 80-plus homers or Carlos Zambrano won't lose 30-plus games ... well, you clearly don't understand math. I feel sorry for you.
