The ESPN analyst and former Mets GM sums up the Cubs outfield situation nicely: Matt (PA): With Soriano coming back tonight and set to play left field for the rest of the year, who is left to man the last two spots? While struggling with the bat, Pie has shown he is far and away their best outfielder. Jacque Jones in center with Soriano in left and either Cliff Floyd or Matt Murton in right is a scary thought. Steve Phillips: The Cubs have a real problem on their hands. Pie is the only true center fielder among the five outfielders, but he's hitting only .111 and he has options left, which allow his contract to be moved back to the minor leagues. Jacque Jones can play center field, but he will be at most adequate at the position. Matt Murton and Cliff Floyd are truly only left fielders. Putting them in right field could lead to a record number of triples against the Cubs. The Cubs' outfielders have struggled significantly at the plate as well. There is no real good answer to their situation. I would probably go with Soriano in left, Jones in center, and platoon Floyd and Murton in right, but the Cubs have to find an extra outfielder (and an extra spot on the roster) for a defensive specialist in the outfield. They are going to have to make defensive replacements late in the game. Pie is a top prospect and can't just be a role player and defensive substitute. If he's not playing every day in Chicago, he should be at AAA refining his skills. The problem I see is, with Jacque Jones in center, the Cubs really have 3 oufielders playing out of position every game. Soriano is still an infielder playing in the outfield, and Murton and Floyd really belong in left.
