Statistically Speaking, Some Stink

While some Cubs are batting very well, other Cubs are not. With the bullpen shaky and Mr. Met erratic, it would help to have the offense be a little less, um, offensive. Or at least more consistent. So, it’s time for our apparently weekly look behind the Cubs statistics: The $136 million man is batting .167 with runners in scoring position, .200 with runner in scoring position and two out and has struck out 11 times (to go along with 12 hits and two walks). Put another way, the 40-40 man is currently a 0-1 man – which is no home runs and one stolen base more than my 21-month-old son. Jacque Jones is batting .200 with runners in scoring position and has managed one RBI – which is one more than my 3-year-old dog. Cesar Izturis, who was supposed to surprise us all at the plate this year, has indeed shocked fans with a .211 average and a .143 average with runners in scoring position. He has managed two RBIs – which is half the number of left fielders the Cubs play regularly. Yes, this looks solely at the negative. Yes, Ryan Theriot, Derrek Lee and others have been impressive. But when you're 5-8, you look at the negative.
