Stay Classy, Sports Guy

In his chat today, apparently the first since the Colts won the Super Bowl, Bill Simmons shows he's as classy as ever: Jesse (Indianapolis, IN): So I'm curious what you're take is on A-Rod's ridiculous start to the season. Has he finally been embraced by NY and will he play like this when it really matters? Or does he revert to the same old head case we know and love. Bill Simmons: A-Rod is like pollen -- you can always count on him to make an impact in April in (sic) May. Which, of course, gives us the opportunity to bring up other wrong things Bill Simmons has smugly written. We'll stick to the chats, as the columns provide so much other fodder. Such as in this chat on January 10, 2007: Melissa (Indiana): Hey Bill! In your Week 17 column, you stated that you could not wait until Peyton Manning was a ringless commentator being badgered by inferior quarterbacks about not winning The Big One. I thought that was kind of rude and mean. Please, clarify or explain your hatred. Bill Simmons: I got a few e-mails about that -- I don't hate anyone. Just making a joke about the Manning-Marino parallels. Look, Manning makes himself a target by pumping out all these commercials and interviews, then doing the happy feet dance every January. There was plenty of dancing in Indianapolis in January - and February, for that matter. And this, from the same chat: Kevin W. (Boise, Idaho): Bill, your most premature, incorrect statement of the 2006 NFL season has to have been when you said (in Week 3 no less) that the biggest blunder of the draft was when the Colts didn't trade up to draft Maroney. A few picks later they got the guy they wanted all along in Addai. Both are excellent young runners but Addai clearly fits the Colts offense better as a more accomplished blocker and better receiver. And he had a better rookie season. Any regrets for making this comment so early? Bill Simmons: No regrets at all. I don't think Addai is that good -- seems like a 3rd down back to me. I don't watch the Colts and think, "My God, how are we gonna stop Joseph Addai!" Watch what he does against Baltimore this week -- if he gets to 50 yards, I'll be surprised. Addai had just 39 yards, while splitting time with Dominic Rhodes, in the Ravens game. So, thankfully, he wasn't surprised. The very next week, however, the Colts and Addai faced the Patriots and the aforementioned Maroney. Maroney - the very player the "Sports Guy" says the Colts so badly screwed up in not taking - managed 13 yards on eight carries (including 9 on one carry). Addai, meanwhile, had 56 yards on 14 carries - and a moderately important 3-yard game-winning touchdown. On first down, I believe. Not third. Perhaps the Patriots should have been saying "My God, how are we gonna stop Joseph Addai!" Oh, and the next week, in Miami - at the Super Bowl, mind you - Addai had 77 yards rushing and 66 yards receiving. Maroney, alas, had none that week.
