Um ... What?!?

What in the world is John McDonough saying here? This story says the Cubs are backing off signing Mr. Met, due to the pending sale of the Cubs.

“Ideally, in a perfect scenario, we’d like to keep Carlos, who represents, I think, what we’re looking for,” McDonough said this afternoon during a conference call with reporters covering Opening Day at the Great American Ball Park. “It’s that incredible passion and enthusiasm. ... I think, however, all of this needs to be addressed at the appropriate time. Jim and I need to dialogue a little bit more. There is going to be a process that takes place, and all of this will be addressed at the appropriate time. When exactly that is, I don’t know.”

So, they are jeopardizing signing Mr. Met to a relatively bargain price and using the sale as the excuse/reason/whatever? Can't they just call the new guy and say, "Hey, do you mind if we do this? He's one of the five best young pitchers in baseball. Thanks."

For his part, Mr. Met says he isn't worried. Then again, he doesn't seem to worry about anything. Ever.

"Like Mark [Prior] said, I'm just an employee here," Zambrano said after his seventh consecutive April start without a victory. "I don't have to worry about if they want to sell the Cubs or not. Just keep pitching my game and doing my job here."

Well, I don't like it. Nor do I like Mr. Met quoting Mark Prior. That's bad karma.
