Astros Retire Wrong Shirt
Written by wrigleyville
Monday, 27 August 2007

"You see, despite my wealthy lifestyle, I only own three shirts. With those two now permanently encased in glass, I shall forever be forced to wear this one."

The Houston Astros retired Jeff Bagwell's number yesterday, and Bagwell marked the occassion by demonstrating his commitment to recycling -- namely, by recycling the curtains in his parents' bedroom (circa 1971) into a shirt for the ceremony. With yesterday's outfit, Bagwell took the award for "Most Unfashionable Outfit to Appear on a Major League Baseball Field in Houston," a title previously held by William Devane for his portrayal of Mike Leak in The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training. We at Wrigleyville23 would like to congratulate Bagwell for the dual honors.

No disrespect to Bagwell, but having one's number retired by the Astros is hardly a tribute. If you make the All Star Game once while playing for the Astros, you're assured of getting a huge contract, a parade, and your number retired.

In the Cubs' more than one-hundred year history, we've retired exactly four numbers. In the Astros' 47 year history, they've retired 8 numbers. Bagwell joins an illustrious group of journeymen including Mike Scott, Larry Dierker and Jose Cruz. And there can be little doubt that Biggio will join this salute to mediocrity sometime next year. I'm just surprised they didn't retire Morgan Ensberg's number shortly before shipping him out of town.
