Jose Offerman isn't messing around. Included in this story is one of my biggest Associated Press pet peeves - their insistence on making it AP style to use "sustained" instead of "suffered" an injury, or just saying what the injury is. For example: Catcher John Nathans was hit in the head and sustained a concussion. He tried to keep playing, but left the game with nausea and collapsed in the dugout, team spokesman Nick Razzette said. Beech, a left-hander, sustained a broken middle finger on his right hand. Both players were treated at a hospital and released. Why not just say Beech "broke the middle finger on his right hand"? It saves words and actually reads like people talk. Why not just say John Nathans was hit on (AP says "in" - ?) "the head and suffered a concussion" - again a word people actually use. This is a close cousin to TV reporters who insist on saying players "sustained a contusion." Huh? A contusion is a bruise. Why use the $2 word, just to prove what a twit you are? Also, the Bridgeport Bluefish have a team spokesman?
