Is Baltimore Done Bitching Yet?
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 09 December 2007
Being an Indianapolis native of a certain age, it is always a pleasure to watch Baltimore get itself all twisted in a bunch over the Colts leaving town 23 years ago. And it's even more of a pleasure to watch the Colts win (it's 37-7 at halftime, as of this writing).

The media trots out the woe-is-Baltimore stories, and Baltimorarians take their shots. They always note that Johnny U mumbled that he refused to recognize the franchise and refused to acknowledge Indianapolis records, which is handy because Peyton Manning has broken most if not all of his meaningful records.

Missing from these stories are some useful facts, including:

1. Nobody went to Baltimore Colts games. An average of 37,441 people managed to rouse themselves from their Sunday activities to go to Memorial Stadium in 1983. If the Colts were that important to them, they should have put down the crab cakes and cigarettes and lugged themselves to the games. But they didn't.

2. Franchises move all the time. Los Angeles stole the Lakers from Minneapolis. Detroit stole the Pistons from Fort Wayne. Utah stole the Jazz from New Orleans. Baltimore stole the Browns from Cleveland. The United States stole hockey from Canada. And so on. Get over yourself, Baltimore. Nobody cares. It's been nearly a quarter of a century. You stole a team that people actually wanted to see.

3. Robert Irsay left in the middle of the night not just because he was a sneaky bastard (which he was) but because the handsy Mayor Donald Schaefer had threatened to take the franchise over by eminent domain. Bye-bye, Baltimore.

One other note: Once this game is complete tonight, the Colts will have made the playoffs more times in Indianapolis in 23 years (11 times) than they did in Baltimore (10).
And a final note: Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun recommended that Baltimorans should transfer their hate elsewhere - to the Patriots.
