Mark Prior's RotoTimes Injury Notes, 2005
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 26 December 2007
As a public service to our new friends in San Diego (home of the 2004-05 Chicago Cubs, apparently), Wrigleyville23 is posting all of the RotoTimes injury updates from the last three seasons. The first installment is from 2005. Please note that the first spring training post has the Cubs "just being cautious" in delaying his debut, while the last regular season post has Prior denying there was anything wrong even though he had been pulled from the start due to a sore leg. Enjoy! September 7, 2005: Cubs manager Dusty Baker said he pulled Mark Prior from Monday's start because the pitcher's leg was hurting, though Prior denied there was anything wrong, according to the Daily Southtown. "It's a little light strain that we've got to watch," Baker said. June 26, 2005: The Cubs activated Mark Prior from the disabled list for his start against the White Sox on Sunday. Prior allowed just one hit in six scoreless innings, with three strikeouts and no walks. Prior had been out since taking a line drive off his right elbow on May 27. June 22, 2005: Mark Prior took another step towards returning from his fractured elbow this weekend when he pitched a five-inning simulated game on Tuesday, according to the Daily Southtown. The Cubs will decide in the next couple of days whether Prior will come off the disabled list to start Sunday. June 20, 2005: The Cubs are moving up the next simulated game for Mark Prior by one day to Tuesday, according to MLB.com. If everything goes well, Prior may be able to return against the White Sox on Sunday. "It's a possibility," manager Dusty Baker said. "It's not out of the realm of possibility. We'll see how he does first." June 19, 2005: Mark Prior threw on flat ground before Sunday's game and will have a side session off a mound on Monday, according to the AP. "He's just on his normal, five-day routine," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "He felt good." June 17, 2005: Mark Prior threw about 60 pitches over four innings in a simulated game Friday afternoon, according to MLB.com. "Mark threw the ball well and it was a pleasant surprise, actually," manager Dusty Baker said. "He's pretty sharp. You have to wait a couple days to see if there's soreness in that area. We were pleasantly surprised to see his velocity and his sharpness and his breaking ball, and just the fact that he's on the mound." June 14, 2005: Mark Prior threw off the mound for the second time in three days Tuesday and said he felt good, throwing all of his pitches, according to the AP. Prior is out with a fractured elbow. June 13, 2005: Mark Prior tested his fractured elbow yesterday with a brief bullpen session, primarily tossing fastballs, according to the Daily Southtown. It was the first time he threw off a mound since he sustained the injury. The Cubs haven't set a specific timetable for his return to action. June 12, 2005: Mark Prior went through pitching drills with a towel on Saturday and will play long toss today, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cubs still haven't established a timetable for his return. June 11, 2005: Mark Prior is still feeling some pain in his right elbow, according to the AP. "There's still some discomfort and there's a lot of time," said Prior. "So we're just going to try to work through it and get back as quick as I can." Prior hopes to do some throwing Sunday as he regains full extension. June 9, 2005: Mark Prior continues to play catch, although he won't be able to do anything strenuous until all the fluid is out of his right elbow, according to the Chicago Tribune. "There's still tenderness in there," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "And if you saw the line drive, you'd expect there still to be a little bit. As the soreness leaves we'll accelerate the program. Hopefully, that will be in the next few days." June 8, 2005: Mark Prior, out since May 28th with a fractured bone near his elbow, was able to play toss again on Wednesday, according to the AP. Prior reported that he still has tenderness. "There's probably a little fluid still in there which we'll be able to get out in time and then the full extension won't bother him at all," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. June 7, 2005: Mark Prior threw from 120 feet for about 10 minutes before Tuesday's game, according to the AP. Prior has been out with a fractured elbow. "He is still very tender on the contusion side," said Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal. June 6, 2005: Mark Prior stated on Sunday that he has no doubt in his mind that he will return to action this season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'll be back before the end of the season," Prior said. "I just don't know when. No one can really say when. This is one of the stage injuries where we have to get through the first stage." Prior has been out since taking a line drive off his elbow on May 27. June 4, 2005: Mark Prior is still dealing with inflammation in his fractured right elbow, according to the Daily Southtown. He will not beging throwing again until the swelling has gone down. "It's a long ways from where it was, but he's still trying to get some inflammation out of there," manager Dusty Baker said. May 31, 2005: There's still no time frame as to when Mark Prior will return from a hairline fracture in his elbow, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Everything right now is about when the inflammation and the swelling is going to go down," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "That's the key. It's getting better. That swelling is going down pretty good." May 29, 2005: The Cubs placed Mark Prior on the disabled list Saturday after he was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his pitching elbow, the result of being hit by a line drive Friday, according to the Daily Southtown. He has no timeline set for a return, but the fracture is not as serious as the one that forced Joe Borowski to miss two months this year. May 28, 2005: The Chicago Tribune reports that an MRI revealed that Mark Prior sustained a hairline fracture in his pitching elbow when he was hit by a line drive Friday. One source said the injury should heal in 3-4 weeks, after which Prior would need about another month to rehab. However, the Cubs are concerned about his status for the remainder of the season, as they await more details on the injury. May 27, 2005: Mark Prior left Friday's game after taking a line drive off his upper right forearm near his elbow. Prior fell to the ground and writhed in pain. He was able to walk off the field moments later but kept his arm bent all the way back to the clubhouse. Initial X-rays were negative, but an MRI revealed a "slight" fracture in Prior's elbow, according to ESPN.com. The Cubs are uncertain as to how much time Prior will miss. April 12, 2005: The Cubs officially activated Mark Prior from the 15-day DL to start Tuesday's game, according to the AP. Unfortunately, the game was rained out and was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Prior will start Game 2 of that doubleheader. April 11, 2005: Mark Prior will make his 2005 season debut for the Cubs on Tuesday when he starts against the Padres, according to the AP. Prior was on the disabled list with elbow inflammation and made one minor league rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on April 7. "I feel good and ready to go," Prior said. "I expect to give us a chance to win the ballgame." April 10, 2005: Mark Prior threw 30 pitches from the Wrigley Field mound before Sunday's game, according to the AP. The Cubs will announce on Monday whether he starts at home against San Diego or in the minors on Tuesday. April 9, 2005: Mark Prior plans to pitch Tuesday, either for the Cubs or in another minor league stint, according to the AP. The Cubs will make a final decision on Sunday. "Mark is going to throw on the side tomorrow ... We want to see how he feels and make the decision with the information we need to have," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "The priority is that he feels good." April 9, 2005: A decision is expected today on whether Mark Prior will make his season debut with the Cubs or toss another minor league game on Tuesday, according to the Daily Southtown. His minor league outing Thursday started off poorly, as he allowed five runs in the first inning, but he finished well, allowing only two runs over the next five innings. April 8, 2005: After giving up five runs and six hits in the first inning of his rehab start for Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Mark Prior allowed just two runs and three hits over the next five innings. He threw 88 pitches and finished with seven strikeouts and one walk. April 7, 2005: Mark Prior is expected to throw between 80 and 90 pitches today in his rehab start with Triple-A Iowa, according to the Chicago Tribune. He's scheduled to make his Cubs debut Tuesday, barring a setback. April 5, 2005: Mark Prior threw 34 pitches in a bullpen session on Tuesday and reported no elbow problems, according to the AP. Prior is scheduled to start for Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. April 4, 2005: Mark Prior will pitch for Triple-A Iowa at Albuquerque on Thursday and, if all goes well, will be activated to start April 12th against San Diego. April 3, 2005: The Cubs officially placed Mark Prior on the 15-day DL, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Prior is hoping to return in time to start April 12. March 31, 2005: The Chicago Tribune reports that Mark Prior is scheduled to pitch in a Triple-A game Saturday, which will allow the Cubs to backdate a trip to the DL, so he could make his first regular season start April 12. March 30, 2005: The Cubs want Mark Prior to pitch in a minor league game Saturday, rather than with the Cubs, so he could backdate a possible trip to the disabled list, according to the Daily Southtown. March 29, 2005: The Daily Southtown reports that Mark Prior tested his inflamed elbow yesterday by throwing to batters for the first time since March 10. He tossed a four-inning simulated game. "I'm encouraged," Prior said. "But I have to see how I feel (today) and the next day." Barring a setback, he could be ready for a regular season game around April 12. March 27, 2005: Mark Prior is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game on Monday, according to the AP. March 26, 2005: Recovering from an inflamed elbow, Mark Prior is slated to toss a side session today, rest Sunday and throw a simulated game early next week, according to the Daily Southtown. He hopes to get into a Cactus League game before camp wraps up. March 24, 2005: Mark Prior threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday and reported no problems with his elbow, according to the AP. "It felt good today. The stuff's there. I'm not worried," Prior said. The Cubs are hoping that Prior will progress quickly enough to pitch in a Cactus League game. March 22, 2005: Mark Prior he threw "30 or so" pitches from a mound Tuesday and "felt fine," according to the AP. The Cubs are still hopeful that he'll be able to pitch in a regular-season game by the middle of April. March 22, 2005: Mark Prior reported no lingering elbow pain Monday after throwing off a mound Sunday in a practice session, according to the Chicago Tribune. He took Monday off and plans to throw again today. Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild is optimistic that Prior will be able to pitch in April. March 21, 2005: The Daily Southtown reports that Mark Prior tested his sore elbow by throwing off a mound yesterday for the first time. Prior, whose elbow inflammation is almost gone, threw 10-12 pitches and mixed in some curveballs. The Cubs will wait to see how it responds today before deciding his next step, which could be a simulated game. March 20, 2005: Mark Prior played catch for the second day in a row on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune. "The intensity was a lot more [Saturday]," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "He came in and felt good, so we went ahead and threw and he is doing very well. If anything, there is probably a pinch of inflammation left in there. Everything seems to be taking care of itself." March 19, 2005: Mark Prior played catch on Friday and the swelling around his ulnar nerve subsided substantially, and he felt only minor discomfort, according to the Chicago Tribune. March 18, 2005: Mark Prior will not be over his elbow inflammation for the Cubs' first series of the season, according to the Daily Southtown. He played catch yesterday but still felt sore. "The inflammation is not completely out of there," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "We have been pretty clear on Mark that we are not planning anything. As soon as the inflammation is done, we will accelerate the throwing program." March 17, 2005: Mark Prior was able to test his sore elbow by playing catch from about 80 feet for five minutes yesterday, according to the Daily Southtown. March 16, 2005: Mark Prior is expected to play catch on flat ground today to test his inflamed elbow, according ot the Daily Southtown. March 14, 2005: Mark Prior will miss his next spring start Tuesday because of inflammation in his elbow, which developed after his first outing, according to the Cubs official website. There is no damage to the ligament and no damage to the ulnar nerve, according to Cubs general manager Jim Hendry. Given the elbow problems that Prior had at the beginning of last season, this is cause for some concern. March 9, 2005: Mark Prior likely will throw three innings in his spring debut tomorrow, according to the Chicago Tribune. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Prior has had no recurrence of the elbow and Achilles' problems of last year. March 4, 2005: Mark Prior will toss a simulated game today and hold off making his exhibition debut until Wednesday or Thursday next week, according to the Chicago Tribune. Having been troubled by an Achilles injury last season, he's just being cautious. "There's no real point in going out and throwing two (exhibition) innings," Prior said. "A lot of things can happen. You can throw 25 pitches in the first inning, you can throw three pitches in the second inning, three [in the third]."
