Saints Win, ESPN is Still Loathesome
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 11 December 2007
The Saints won last night, and I know not many of you loyal Wrigleyville23 readers will honestly give a flying flip, but seeing that the Bears (and, I'm assuming that since this site is predominately a Chicago-area sports phenomenon, you people would like the Bears. I'm also going to assume you like deep-dish pizza, beer, and thick, juicy hot dogs called brats. That's what she said.) are pretty much in the same boat as my team, I'll be concice and say that Drew Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Reggie Bush is hurt, and Marques Colston is probably one of the best 7th Round draft picks...ever. EVER!

What I really wanted to harp on this morning is the relentless storytelling ESPN feels they have to shove down my throat about this inexplicable Michael Vick situation during my Monday Night Football experience. It's bad enough that I have to listen to the FOX telecasts on Sundays, but listening to these blithering mongols on MNF is really getting tiresome.

Instead of shaming Michael Vick for what he's done, no, ESPN feels the need to portray this sense of loathing for Vick. Why are they trying to empathize with him? Why do they feel sorry for him? Why are Falcons players writing "Free Mike Vick" on their undershirts? Don't they know that he...errr...committed a crime? It is completely and utterly mindbottling (please tell me you got that one, WV) how today's media--and in this case, it's ESPN--feels the need to glorify Vick's actions by giving it that much coverage.

Case in point: at the beginning of the pregame show (which is disturbingly overblown in the first place), one of the first things the talking heads mentioned was that "We'll have to deal with the Michael Vick situation all night during the game." This, after I endured almost three hours of prior Michael Vickedness on SportsCenter (For the record, I watched SportsCenter for this long for experimental purposes. For you people.).

If there is anyone out there who can come up with a way to sync a radio broadcast with a television broadcast, he'll be a bagillionaire. The Saints have a great gameday radio broadcast team, and it would be a treat to hear them call the game while seeing it on TV and not having that weird TV/radio lapse thing going on. Anyhow, the Saints are "back" in the playoff hunt, tied with 17 other teams at 6-7. Yay?

Please excuse this giant ramble. Hopefully, you'll be quickly redirected to your regularly scheduled blogcast. That is all.
