Curse Of The Murphys
Written by wrigleyville

If your name is Murphy - or Cohan, Chance, Steinfeldt, Tinker, Howard, Sheckard, Evers, Moran, or Williams - you can play a role in breaking some made-up curse around the Chicago Cubs. Mike Downey's column is all over the place, so I didn't fully follow. But there's a dinner involved, and you have to have one of those 10 last names to be involved. I'm guessing they'll check IDs at the door. This was the most (only) interesting part of the column: " ... the goat denied access to a Wrigley Field game in 1945 was named Murphy, that the New York Mets' announcer when a black cat came onto the field in 1969 was named Bob Murphy, that the stadium where the Cubs collapsed in 1984 was named for Jack Murphy." There's only one Murphy - Bill (with the Diamondbacks) - in a National League organization right now, and he doesn't project to be doing much damage this year. There are four in American League organizations - David (Boston), Donnie (Oakland), Steven (Texas) and Tommy (Anaheim) - though none seem to be too much of a threat at this point. David Murphy of the Red Sox seems to be the best of the lot, while Tommy Murphy of Anaheim could see some utility time with the Angels. Therefore, with Jack Murphy Stadium no more and the league largely Murphyless, it may be time for the Cubs to make their move. Before another 99 years pass.
