I do not fully understand the stat-y stuff you find at other blogs, such as the soon-to-be renamed Another Cubs Blog (just a guess). But I find it interesting and appreciate the concept that you can use a statistical interpretation of the art of baseball to predict future success (or failure). It's fun and does nothing if not provide another layer of enjoyment/discussion/debate for baseball fans. In short, it helps increase interest in a game that not long ago was seen as an old man's game. Don't tell that to Murray Chass: I receive a daily e-mail message from Baseball Prospectus, an electronic publication filled with articles and information about statistics, mostly statistics that only stats mongers can love. To me, VORP epitomized the new-age nonsense. For the longest time, I had no idea what VORP meant and didn’t care enough to go to any great lengths to find out. I asked some colleagues whose work I respect, and they didn’t know what it meant either. Finally, not long ago, I came across VORP spelled out. It stands for value over replacement player. How thrilling. How absurd. Value over replacement player. Don’t ask what it means. I don’t know. I suppose that if stats mongers want to sit at their computers and play with these things all day long, that’s their prerogative. But their attempt to introduce these new-age statistics into the game threatens to undermine most fans’ enjoyment of baseball and the human factor therein. People play baseball. Numbers don’t. You can not care about VORP. You can think it's nonsense. You can not understand it (me!). But why parade yourself as a stodgy turd for all the world to see? What does VORP do to threaten Murray Chass from his ivory tower on 42nd Street? So, we put the research intern to work to find other things Murray Chass does not like. Here is what he found: 1. Casette tapes and players. Vinyl and turntables worked just fine. Just fine! You hear me? 2. Car seats. Kids in Murray's day did just fine rolling around in the back seat. 3. West Coast Baseball. New York should always have four teams, because it is - you know - the center of the universe. 4. Flat screen TVs. A television should be a piece of furniture you put in front of the davenport. 5. Cable and computers. Seems nobody cares what The New York Times has to say any more. Sad. (Thanks to Rob G. for pointing out the link.)
