Sun-Times Makes Prosecutorial Error
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 27 February 2007
We at Wrigleyville23 are no fans of the Tribune owning the Cubs (largely due to accountability issues), but the Sun-Times' goofy "Tribune on Trial" series is nothing short of juvenile. Today, they trot out the sadly bitter Milo Hamilton and try - unsuccessfully - to get him to dump on the Trib for their stewardship of the Cubs the last quarter century or so (even though they hired Harry Caray instead of him - an utterly brilliant move, by the way): Do you think the Trib has done a good job of owning the Cubs? I think they've done a good job. The Wrigley family made chewing gum and didn't do much to promote the team or enhance the team's chances of winning a pennant. When you have a rotating coaching staff instead of a manager and you experiment with things like that, that says something. The Tribune made it more of a baseball organization, as witnessed by the fact they brought in Dallas Green. And then he started bringing in valuable baseball people. But Green probably wouldn't have very many nice things to say about the Trib, would he? He probably would give mixed reviews, probably because of the way they kind of dumped him. But are four postseason berths -- and no World Series appearance -- in 25 years enough? I would say with the clubs they've had, that's probably not enough. The '84 team should have been in the World Series. Witness Hamilton did the prosecutors in this fantasyland case no good. Not as big of a mistake as having O.J. try on those gloves, but still a grave prosecutorial error.
