Bronx Is Burning Review: Way Too Short
Written by wrigleyville
Wednesday, 04 July 2007
Tuning in to Wednesday Night Baseball on ESPN tonight, I was extremely disappointed to see that the Yankees weren't on. Fully a quarter of their games (at least) have been on ESPN or ESPN2, and I've come to rely on the reassuring presence of Joe Torre.

But thanks to the good folks in Bristol, who know just what I need (more Yankees, dammit!!), the eight-part "Bronx is Burning" miniseries starts Monday night to relive the magic that was the 1977 Yankees. Reggie. Billy. Munson. And George. How can it fail?

I do have one complaint, however: It's an eight-part miniseries. Eight. Eight! I can't believe they are limiting it to just eight. How are they going to capture the drama that is the Yankees - the 1977 Yankees - in a mere eight parts? The Yankees deserve a 174-part miniseries to fully portray what happened that year.

Luckily for those of us who can't get enough of the Bombers, the ESPN programmers have other Yankee-centered miniseries coming, including:

"Three Hours In August: The Jim Leyritz Story." This four-part miniseries tells the heartbreaking tale of August 4, 1991, the day Jim Leyritz's Honda Accord broke down on the Long Island Expressway. Confusion between Jim and the AAA operator left Leyritz stranded on the side of the LIE for three hours, forcing him to miss a surprise birthday party for pitcher Jeff Johnson.

"Real World: The Bronx." This is the true story, of seven Yankees, picked to live in a house, and have their lives taped, to find out what happens when Yankees stop being polite, and start getting real. The Real World. Viewers will learn which seven Yankees will bunk together during the special hour-long first episode.

"Joe Torre's Colon: A Documentary." ESPN will air the full video from each of Joe Torre's colonoscopies in this groundbreaking documentary.

While each of the shows will receive heavy promotion for their initial showings on ESPN and its related networks, as well as on ESPN.com and the ESPNZone restaurants, viewers who miss the original airings can catch them in heavy rotation on ESPN-Yankees. Also known as ESPN. Channel 73 or 206 on DirecTV.
