If there is a litmus test for sports journalists today, it is that you must believe that having homefield advantage for the World Series determined by the All-Star Game is the ultimate source of evil in the sporting world -- even worse than steroids. In every pre-game analysis, every journalist must take their token shot at how stupid an idea this was. They never explain their position, nor discuss any other ideas. They just criticize, laugh and move on. The "sacred cow" that these journalists are yearning for is the system whereby homefield advantage alternated annually between the leagues. Somehow the arbitrariness of the last digit of the year is just SO much better than the arbitrariness of the All-Star Game outcome. And while the AL has won the last four All-Star Games, homefield advantage didn't seem to matter to the Marlins in '03, or the Cards in '06. So Bud, just keep doin' what you're doin'. This format works fine. And at the very worst, it's at least as good as the old way.
