Bill Simmons has all but guaranteed a strong performance by the Big Ten in this year's NCAA tournament. Capping a year in which "The Sports Guy": Badmouthed the National League before, during and after the Cardinals won the World Series ... Lost in the first 15 minutes of the World Series of Poker and then blamed it on the "kind of guy" who is ruining Vegas for real gamblers like himself ... Lost a season-long bet on picking games to his wife, who is more concerned about Justin Timberlake than Bill's beloved Tom Brady ... Lost a "celebrity" go-cart race to some entertainment reporter after telling the world how competitive he is ... Dumped all over Peyton Manning right up to the day before the Super Bowl and then oddly went into his longest silence since he started writing the column and then suddenly became a huge college basketball fan, after ignoring the sport for five years ... He is now talking smart about the admittedly weak Big Ten. Thank you, thank you Mr. Smart Sports Guy, from a Big Ten fan. For the record, this is what he has to say: As for the Big Ten, its second-best team (Wisconsin) isn't as good as Kansas, Texas or Texas A&M, and I wasn't even remotely impressed by Purdue (a No. 9 seed), Indiana (No. 7) or Illinois (No. 12), although I do think Michigan State (No. 11) has a chance to crack the Sweet 16 because of Tom Izzo and Drew Neitzel. Regardless, how did the Big Ten send six teams to the tournament when most of its games had the same disjointed, scrappy, uncomfortable flow of a woman's basketball game? Did you ever watch a Big Ten game that didn't involve OSU and think to yourself, "Wow, this is some high-caliber hoops!" Oklahoma State would have been the third-best team in that conference and it's headed to the NIT. Same for Kansas State. And Syracuse. So ... what? Two Big Ten teams in the Final Four? (Additionally: I recognize that I have likely locked in a repeat of the Big Ten's stinkiness in last year's tournament by raising the issue. But the man is so often wrong that it gave me a moment of hope...)
