Dan Shaughnessy's Contempt For Fans
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 27 March 2007
Think the Chicago media is insufferable? Try Boston, where Dan Shaughnessy exposes himself as an insecure twit because - gasp! - Curt Schilling has the temerity to have his own blog and - gasp! - communicate directly with his fans.

Apparently, Shaughnessy believes communication with the masses is the exclusive province of the crumb-draped wretches who dominate an industry born in 1445 and peaked more than three decades ago.

In this "humorous" column that would be rightly mocked in a 30,000-circulation paper (the Globe's circulation is 368,000 and falling rapidly), Shaughnessy portrays all fans who ask Schilling questions as slobbering sycophants who wish only to massage Schilling's, um, ego. At firejoemorgan.com, they show the opposite is true.

We'll leave it to others to detail all of Shaughnessy's foibles, but this attitude is just indicative of the old media view of a world that is quickly slipping away from them: Politicians, CEOs and even baseball players can bypass the doughnut-clogged filter that is the old media. And they simply don't like it.

Can you blame them? They are akin to autoworkers being replaced on the assembly line - though a much higher percentage of autoworkers produced something of value.

Update: By the way, here is the link to Schilling's blog, as well as his response to Shaughnessy (known as Curly Haired Boyfriend, thanks to Carl Everett).
