Prior, Wood Have Cubs Fans Feeling Funny
Written by wrigleyville
Friday, 23 March 2007
Is this what we've become? Five strong spring training innings in two days - after two weeks of crapitude and three seasons of misery - and we're all set to believe in Kerry Wood and Mark Prior? Really?

Writing as the biggest Mark Prior sucker, er, supporter in a 500-mile radius (I can't compete with some of the nuts in Chicago), I want to believe as much as anybody. I really, really do. But it's four innings. 59 pitches. Against the Padres. In spring training.

Not to mention Woody. He's pitched four innings all spring. With an ERA of 9.00 (though all of the runs were in one inning, caused largely by sloppy fielding and catching).

But reading the InterWeb today, you'd think it was 2003 all over again. Remember this?

For example:

The Chicago Sun-Times declares Prior's outing a "command performance" before crashing my computer with their stupid pop up ads.

Cubs.com says Prior "shows big improvement," while saying "Wood hums through outing, set for more."

Another Cubs Blog says "Prior looked much better today" before reverting to its natural pessimism.

A League Of Her Own worries that the Ghostbusters 3 (or whatever number they're on) is about to be unleashed on Chicago due to the Wood and Prior performances.

The Bleed Cubbie Blue Kool-Aid drinkers immediately predict a 140-win season, while The Cub Reporter story plays it straight as commenters hash out how hard Prior really threw.

The Goat Riders pay no mind, but are busily selling their wares. Seriously, would any of you buy a Wrigleyville23 mug? Hat? Shirt? If so, why? I think my business model would be to price them outrageously high - say, $500 for a shirt - and hope to sell one or two and call it a day.

And, here at Wrigleyville, well, we said Prior has been bringing the worst traits of Amanda Wurlitzer and Ebby Calvin LaLoosh to the dance. The control of Amanda and the power of Nuke would be great. The opposite, not so much.

Anyway, Mark Prior is the girl you just can't say no to. Ever. And you just hope and pray some day it will work out. And once in a while it does. But usually not. (Woody is her goofier looking friend in this scenario, by the way).
