A Wrigleyville23 exclusive!

The Chicago Cubs were rumored to be close to signing staff ace Carlos Zambrano to a five-year extension this evening after breaking a deadlock in the negotiations by offering to name a star after the Venezuelan pitcher.

The Cubs declined to comment on negotiations, but a source told Wrigleyville23 that the Cubs were offering to pay Zambrano $17 million a year for five years and name a star after him through the International Star Registry. The $17 million annual salary appeared to be less than the $18 million the Cubs previously offered.

“Carlos really, really wanted a star named for him after hearing a commercial about it on the radio,” the source said. “He kept telling his agent, `I don’t care about the money. They’re going to name a star after me! Una estrella! Entiendes?’”

Details – including what they would name the star – were still being worked out Monday night. Zambrano’s agents declined to comment and just sighed when asked about non-monetary details.

The source said Zambrano’s agents repeatedly tried to tell their client about the disclaimer on the International Star Registry’s Web site: “International Star Registry star naming is not recognized by the scientific community. Your star’s name is reserved in International Star Registry records only.”

They also pointed out that some had suggested the Cubs could name an island after Zambrano off the coast of his native Venezuela, but he wasn’t interested.

“A planet is bigger than an island,” he told his agent. “Get it done.”

“Star.”

“Whatever.”
