It's Still Okay To Hate The Packers
Written by wrigleyville

Rick Morrissey is encouraging Bears fans to climb aboard the Packers' bandwagon. And with this column, Morrissey becomes part of a crappy brethren of Chicago sportswriters who write this same f'ing column every time the Packers put together a decent season. "Hey Bears fans, our neighbors to the north are putting together a great season -- and if you take a close look at this team, there's a lot to like..." They then proceed to tell us that the Packers represent the qualities that Bears fans should respect. And then -- and this is absolutely essential to these columns -- they tell us how much we'd love Brett Favre if he were a Bear. I hate these columns, and I hate the braindead columnists who pull this topic out of the file folder every other year. The Bears/Packers rivalry is the most storied in the NFL, and telling Bears fans to root for the Packers disrespects that history. Packers fans weren't rooting for the Bears in the Super Bowl last year, and Bears fans shouldn't root for the Packers this year. I'm tired of the Packers. They're like the 2001 Bears -- a decent-enough team that gets a lot of good breaks, thus giving them a record that doesn't really reflect their talent level. And when the playoffs come around, they won't even sniff the NFC Championship. We also need to declare a national week of respite from Brett Favre and the media circlejerk that accompanies his every performance. We get it. He's defying the odds and having a great season for a 57 year old man. Crap. Remember when Ozzie Smith retired from baseball and milked the spotlight for a full season, accepting gifts and holding court on every road trip for his final year? I thought that was the most obnoxious retirement in history -- but Ozzie's retirement spectacle looks subdued compared to the media whoring that surrounds Favre. Anything less than a temple erected in this man's honor is going to fall short of media expectations. So while there may be some things to respect about the 2007 Green Bay Packers, there's still plenty of reasons not to buy into the hype too. Not that any self-respecting Bears fan would need to be reminded of that -- just our hometown columnists.
