SI Offering Excellent Cubs World Series Odds
Written by wrigleyville

Fresh off not jinxing the Cubs with this story on Aug. 31, Jayson Stark is now picking the Cubs to win the World Series. Not the NLDS. The World Series. Of baseball. As frightening as that is to ponder, his column makes infinitely more sense than this SI.com effort by Jon Heyman (who picked the Reds to win the NL Central). Heyman writes that the Cubs are the least likely team of the eight to win the World Series. Which is fine. That argument can be made. But he places the odds at 25-1. 25-1! In an eight-team tournament, with the Cubs in the decidedly weaker half of the draw. Vegas, recognizing this in addition to the emotional money following Chicago, has the Cubs at 6-1 and 7-2 at various sports books. (His favorite - the Yankees - is getting 5-2 odds, followed by the Red Sox at 3-1, and the Diamondbacks at 8-1, the Rockies at 10-1, the Phillies at 11-1, the Angels at 12-1 and the Indians (with C.C. and Fausto!) at 15-1.) Given that, I ask Jon Heyman: Will you, sir, take a $2,000 bet from Wrigleyville? (If you're not clear on how your odds work, this would pay $50,000 if the Cubs win the World Series, minus a 10 percent ($200) vig.) Or, perhaps I will place $1,000 on each of the eight teams ($8,000, for the mathematically challenged), guaranteeing I would only lose money if the Red Sox or Yankees win the Series, breaking even if the Diamondbacks win and turning a tidy profit on the field. Who's in?
