Dear Ned:

I just finished watching the Cardinals-Brewers game tonight, and I want to commend you for sticking to your principles throughout the game (or at least the part of the game you managed) – even when logic and common sense would demand you do something else.

The Cardinals, as undoubtedly ordered by the drunken Tony LaRussa, blatantly beaned Prince Fielder in the second inning as clear payback for Jeff Suppan throwing at Albert Pujols last night (what's their problem - can't take a joke?). You simply couldn’t let that pass; Prince is your meal ticket. He’s the franchise. And the Cardinals hit him. With a baseball. That could leave a mark.

So you did what was right. You had Seth McClung hit Pujols. Hard. Right in the back! Bam! He had it coming, especially after having the temerity to homer in the first inning. And you are absolutely right not to care that the Cardinals were clinging to a one-run lead in the eighth inning just moments after the Cubs had opened the door very wide by losing again to the Marlins.

No, some things are more important than winning baseball games – or division titles. Like honor. And vengeance. And making sure there are enough doughnuts in the clubhouse for Prince, Johnny and Ray.

Sure, the Cardinals scored four runs after you had McClung bean Pujols. Sure, it reduced the Cubs’ magic number to three. Sure, it derailed the momentum you had built the first two days of the week. Sure, you could have waited until next season to take care of this unpleasantness at a less meaningful time. But that’s for sissies, and you’re no sissy.

So, bravo, Ned. You showed your manhood to the Cardinals and all of Wisconsin, and I want you to know I found it quite impressive.

P.S. It seems others noticed your heroism, too. Oddly, at least one Brewers fan liked it, even while acknowledging it "bit you in the ass."
