Home Grown Thieves

So help me out Cubs fans. I was coaching my son's travel baseball team (13 year olds) tonight when another coach was working with them on base-stealing. He actually invoked Lou Brock -- which these kids have never heard of much less seen. Anyway, to make a long story short, there is one fundamental element to "the jump" that he and I were in disagreement on tonight. He says that he learned it from the Cubs minor league basestealing coach at a coaching clinic this winter. I laughed...told him that I had just won our disagreement because of his source....because I'm a lifelong Cubs fan and you'd have to go back to Lou Brock to name the last home-grown Cubs base-stealer. I use base-stealer in the truest sense. A guy you had to worry about taking a base every time he got on. A guy who was in top 5-8 in the league in SBs. Obviously, I was exaggerating on having to go back to Lou -- but was it a big exaggeration. Name me the last home-grown Cubs base-stealer that would fit that definition -- who also was a regular, every day player (so no Pie...at least not yet.) I don't believe Patterson was ever in the top 5-8 in the NL, though his potential was real. I'm thinking Jerome Walton, maybe? Or Shawon? Ryno was decent but don't believe he was ever a top guy in the league. Then see if you can make a top 10 Cubs home-grown base-stealer list and see how far back you need to reach to do it. My guess is you'd go back to Brock and he's still in the top 5 (unless I'm wrong and Lou wasn't homegrown, but I think he is....then we got robbed by the Cards for him, right?) Again the standards -- Everyday player, legit base-stealing skills/fundamentals, threat to steal everytime he got on base, and was consistently (or even not-so-consistently) in the top 5-8 basestealers in NL every year. Obviously, Bobby D, Eric Young, Kenny Lofton (he's still available, btw) are out as they're not homegrown.
