On both days my sons were born, I watched Cubs games while in the hospital either immediately pre- or post-birth, as the father's role is largely ceremonial in these matters.
On Wrigleyville Jr. The First's birthday, the Cubs lost. I told him to get used to it. He did, as they lost the next year - before finally winning on his second birthday last summer. He wasn't impressed. On Wrigleyville Jr. The Second's birthday, the Cubs won. I told him not to get used to it, but the Cubs are 71-51 since he was born ... so who knows?
Which led me to wonder: How did the Cubs fare on the day the current Cubs were born? Not very well, which was predictable because they were all born in the 1970s and 1980s - not two of the better decades for the team.
Of the players on the active roster (plus Soriano), only 13 were born in season. Of those, the Cubs were 4-8, with two off days and one doubleheader.
Here is your official guide to what happened on Cubs birthdays - baseball and otherwise:
Henry Blanco (8/29/71) - Cubs lose to Braves 5-4. Carla Gugino also is born.
Bob Howry (8/4/73) - Cubs lose to Expos 6-1. Jazz musician Eddie Condon dies.
Daryle Ward (6/27/75) - Cubs lose both ends of a doubleheader to the Pirates 5-3 and 5-1. Tobey Maguire, wrestler Ace Darling and Canadian swimmer Sarah Evanetz are all also born.
Derrek Lee (9/6/75) - Cubs beat the Phillies 7-6. Martina Navratilova seeks political asylum in the United States.
Kosuke Fukudome (4/26/77) - Cubs beat the Cardinals 4-1. Studio 54 opens in New York.
Ryan Dempster (5/3/77) - Cubs beat the Astros 9-0 in front of a crowd of 1,795. President Carter had a very full - if inconsequential - day.
Kerry Wood (6/16/77) - Cubs lose to the Padres 8-6. Leonid Brezhnev named president of Soviet Union.
Aramis Ramirez (6/25/78) - Cubs lose to Phillies 4-2. Argentina wins the World Cup (3-1 over the Netherlands).
Jason Marquis (8/21/78) - Cubs lose to Astros 8-3. Reuben Droughns, Lee Gronkiewicz, rugby player Peter Buxton and Irish soccer player Alan Lee are all also born.
Mike Fontenot (6/9/80) - Cubs lose to Houston 6-2. Richard Pryor suffers burns from free basing cocaine
Carlos Zambrano (6/1/81) - Off day for the Cubs, who were in the midst of losing nine of 10 games. Carl Vinson, a staunch segregationist who served in Congress for more than 50 years, died at age 97.
Matt Murton (10/3/81) - Cubs beat the Phillies 8-4 to improve to 38-64 in the strike-shortened year. The Communist Party of Namibia is founded at a conference in Angola.
Sean Marshall (8/30/82) - Day off. The Cubs were 58-74 and 17.5 games out. PLO leader Yasser Arafat leaves Beirut.
Out of Season Birthdays
Jon Lieber (4/2/70) - Meghalaya becomes autonomous state within India's Assam state.
Mark DeRosa (2/26/75) - A fleeing Irish Republican Army member shoots and kills off-duty London police officer Stephen Tibble, 22, as he gives chase.
Ted Lilly (1/4/76) - "Home Sweet Homer" opens and closes on Broadway.
Alfonso Soriano (1/7/76) - Eric Gagne also is born. 11,800 days later, Gagne has never pitched to Soriano in the major leagues.
Reed Johnson (12/8/76) - The Cubs acquire Greg Gross from Kansas City for infielder Julio Gonzales. Then in a three-team deal, the Cubs also get OF Jim Dwyer from the Mets for Pete LaCock. LaCock then goes to Kansas City for Sheldon Mallory who goes to New York.
Michael Wuertz (12/15/78) - Cleveland, Ohio becomes the first major American city to go into default since the Great Depression, under Mayor Dennis Kucinich. Hard to believe he hasn't been elected president yet.
Ryan Theriot (12/7/79) - Pearl Harbor Day (38th anniversary of). Two days later, the eradication of smallpox is certified.
Rich Hill (3/11/80) - Potsie is offered a singing job at a supper club on "Happy Days." Hilarity ensues.
Carlos Marmol (10/14/82) - President Reagan proclaims war against drugs.
Kevin Hart (11/29/82) - The United Nations General Assembly passes United Nations Resolution 37, stating that the Soviet Union should withdraw from Afghanistan. The Soviet Union politely declines.
Geovany Soto (1/20/83) - Japanese singer Mari Yaguchi is born. Perhaps Fukudome knows who that is.
Ronny Cedeno (2/2/83) - Giovanni Vigliotto goes on trial for multiple counts of bigamy involving 105 women.
Felix Pie (2/8/85) - Actor Marvin Miller died, which of course means Felix Pie could be the reincarnation of the voice of Aquaman.Labels: Birthdays, Chicago Cubs
