Are The Brewers Trying To Maim CC?
Written by wrigleyville
Monday, 18 August 2008
The consensus seems to be that there is no way in Waukesha that CC Sabathia is going to re-sign with the Brewers once he hits free agency this offseason. Given that, do the Brewers care what happens to his arm, so long as he carries them to the postseason? After his first eight starts went 97, 122, 110, 106, 124, 109, 103 and 114 pitches (including two complete games in blowouts), I was willing to give Ned and company the benefit of the doubt. But tonight would seem to indicate otherwise. CC had thrown 110 pitches going into the ninth inning with the Brewers leading 9-2. Ned sends him back out to the mound, and CC promptly loads the bases with just one out. Ned still leaves him in to face Mark Loretta, who hits a sacrifice fly to make it 9-3. CC then walks Miguel Tejada to load the bases before Berkman finally grounds out to third to end the game. Final pitch count: 130 pitches. On August 18. In what had been a 9-2 game. With six weeks to play in the regular season. After he has thrown 885 pitches in his previous eight starts with the team. Does Ned really not trust his bullpen at all? Even with a seven-run lead? Why not save the big fella for some pretty big games coming up next month? Does he realize the season extends beyond August 30? Perhaps the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Mets could file a joint complaint to the commissioner's office, seeking protection for their potential future pitcher. Note: Welcome Rob Neyer readers. Despite what Brewers fans have to say, Rob seems to agree with us.
