Crunching the TOOTBLAN
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 28 August 2008
In one of my comments in an earlier TOOTBLAN post, I was posed with the question, "So...you're okay with the 20 TOOTBLANs?" To which I quickly replied, "As long as I still get the 83 wins in 133 games. Sure, why not?" After consulting the top notch R&D department (on the top floor) of Wrigleyville23, I was forced to consider the following: TOOTBLAN #1 (04/10): W, 7-3 TOOTBLAN #2 (04/13): W, 6-5 TOOTBLAN #3 (04/17): L, 2-9 TOOTBLANs #4 and #5 (04/25): L, 3-5 TOOTBLAN #6 (05/01): L, 3-4 TOOTBLAN #7 (05/04): L, 3-5 TOOTBLAN #8 (05/10): W, 7-2 TOOTBLAN #9 (05/21): L, 3-5 TOOTBLAN #10 (05/24): L, 4-5 TOOTBLAN #11 (06/13): L, 2-3 TOOTBLAN #12 (06/29): L, 1-5 TOOTBLAN #13 (07/11): W, 3-1 TOOTBLAN #14 (07/19): L, 1-4 TOOTBLAN #15 (07/25): L, 2-3 TOOTBLAN #16 (07/30): W, 7-2 TOOTBLAN #17 (08/13): W, 10-2 TOOTBLAN #18 (08/14): W, 11-7 TOOTBLAN #19 (08/17): W, 9-2 TOOTBLAN #20 (08/27): W, 2-0 That runs the Cubs' record in 2008 in which Ryan Theriot commits a TOOTBLAN to 9-10. However, of those 20 TOOTBLANs, 13 are of the "caught stealing" variety. Seven are actual baserunning blunders, like being thrown out by a relay toss trying to go from first to third, or being thrown out trying to advance from second to third on a grounder on the infield, etc. I'll concede that being thrown out 13 times in 33 attempts is a piss poor stealing percentage. However, this is purely a measure of Theriot's stealing success and ability to read pitchers' first moves in an attempt to steal a base (considering he receives the signs from the coaches to steal), not his boneheadedness on the basepaths (which, 7 TOOTBLANS is still not desirable, but far better than 20). Since the official description of a TOOTBLAN is "Thrown Out On The Bases Like A Nincompoop," maybe Ryan's unsuccesseful stealing is a weight too heavy for the TOOTBLAN? Maybe Ryan just isn't a good base stealer and the coaches should stop sending him? I'm not here to discredit the TOOTBLAN...in fact, I think it's a genius measure. Maybe it should be looked at a little more closely to reflect it's nincompoopness, like it's definition implies. I'm just not under the impression that a caught stealing is a nincompoop move, especially if a coach is doing the nincompooping in the dugout to send him stealing. I wish I could say the same for being thrown out on a relay, but you just gotta know if you can beat it. That's a nincompoop move. Caught stealing? C'mon... By the way, Ryan Theriot is hitting .314/.394/.369 this year. The Cubs are 83-50, in first place in the NL Central and lead the Brewers by 6.0 games at this posting. Ryan Theriot also eats thunder, craps lightning, his tears cure lupus and Chuck Norris is known to wear Ryan Theriot pajamas to bed at night. Just sayin'.
