Cubs.com Declares Fukudome Healed
Written by wrigleyville

With one home run, the official Web site of the Chicago Cubs says "Fukudome breaks out of funk." After reading the Cubs.com story, however, I can't quite put my finger on what Lou talked to Fukudome about in their pregame meeting: "We shortened his stride," the Cubs manager said. "It's a simple little thing to get his hands set a little quicker. His swing is shorter, more compact, and into the ball. We talked for awhile. He went out to the batting cage and tried it out and [coaches] Alan Trammell and Gerald Perry said he really swung the bat well there. "He took it into the game and you saw the results," Piniella said. "We didn't change much at all. We shortened his stride, so when his front foot hits, his hands are set quicker and his swing is shorter. He drove that ball really well." ... "We didn't change much. We just shortened his stride. Nothing happens until that front foot hits, and once it hits quicker, you get a better look at the ball, and your swing is shorter and you can shift your weight through the swing. That was a beautiful swing he put on the ball." Watching the game, it wasn't real clear what he did differently. His stride looked a bit shorter, but I would need to see him bat a few more times to be sure. (Note: I didn't watch the game and even if I had I wouldn't have been watching his stride.)
