ESPN (I hate you so much) had Stewart Scott (BOOYAH!) conduct an interview with Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama (queue the rainbows, leaping unicorns and pixie dust showers of gumdrop smiles). However, in the interview, Mr. Obama had this to say about the possibility of a Cubs/White Sox World Series: Scott: “If the Cubs and the White Sox both make it to the World Series? Obama: “I would be going.” Scott: “Who would you root for? Obama: “Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. Southside.” What? Look, I've never been to Wrigley Field myself, but I have seen it millions upon millions of times on WGN. And, in those millions of millions of baseball viewings, the fans always seem to be in touch with the game; rising in clutch moments, cheering the exiting pitcher for his performance, applauding a successful sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly, and the always entertaining throwing of O-Henry! bars onto the field. Add to that that they're hot and drinking? That's a world I yearn to be a part of. I have heard stories of pockets of frat boy, popped collar douchebags that make appearances in the stadium, but I have to believe the majority of fans at the park are actually into the baseball things going on between the lines. I've never been to or seen many games from Comiskey or The Cell or Huggs Diapers-Pink Taco Field on the South side, so I can't really comment on that experience. But, the real question is this: Why the hell is ESPN consuming itself with Barack Obama? Don't we get enough of his droning message on ESPN's mother station and all her competitors? I certainly don't want to hear any political nominee's messages (not that Barack was promoting his ideals, to be fair) on my worldwide leader in sports. There are times and a places to have these things drummed, and they're called the Democratic National Convention and the GOP Convention. For the love of God, just stick to sports. I don't care what Obama or McCain would do about boycotting the Beijing Olympics because of China's ... yada, yada, yada. See ... even I got bored to death just writing it. Sports is what you're supposed to be the worldwide leader in, and you're not even good at it. Don't go into politics. Just ... stop. I'm not Obama's biggest fan, it's no secret. But, to be perfectly fair it would make sense to me that he nor McCain belong on ESPN. DISCLAIMER: This rant has nothing to do with Senators Obama and McCain and everything to do with how terrible ESPN is at being the "Worldwide Leader" in sports.
