No, I Don't Also Hate Mom, Dad and Apple Pie

I have a confession to make that may be very unpopular in some quarters. I hate the Little League World Series. ABC and ESPN are treating the Little League World Series like NBC treats beach volleyball. Yet with both sports, a little bit of coverage goes a long way. I'm not saying that the World Series shouldn't be televised. But how about keeping things in perspective? Show us the finals, and maybe the semi-finals. I don't need to see every game of a playoff system that drags on longer than the NBA's. If it seems like Little League Baseball is on all the time, that's because it is. Under Little League Baseball's new television contract, 50 Little League games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC this year alone. That includes all 32 games of the World Series plus 8 of the Little League Baseball Regional Finals -- plus national coverage of the Junior, Senior and Big League Baseball World Series championship games (whatever all that is). (SIDEBAR -- Please note how Little League Baseball was able to negotiate this much national television coverage and that the NHL gets sporadic coverage on Versus. Then tell me how Gary Bettman still has a job.) But wait, there's more. As part of the Little League Baseball's television contract, ABC/ESPN must also become Title IX Television. The two semi-final and world championship games of the Little League Softball World Series, as well as the Big League, Senior League and Junior League Softball World Series championships will all be televised. Hip, Hip... Hoo-ray! Unfortunately, it also doesn't stop with the endless game coverage. ESPN also subjects us to live remotes from the field, and interviews with the players during Baseball Tonight and SportsCenter. Here's an idea. Why don't you guys take that five minutes of coverage and devote it to one of the other 28 Major League teams whom you regularly ignore? "Sorry, Twins fans we're going to cut away from your highlights right now because this 12-year-old just said his favorite food is hot dogs." There's a reason that Junior High School basketball and Pop Warner football are confined to public access channels. I'm not against little kids playing baseball. I just don't need to see every game they play.
