These Are Dusty's Reds
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 19 August 2008
Dusty Baker recently famously washed his hands of the mess that is the 2008 Cincinnati Reds (55-71, 22.5 GB): "I have never wanted to win more than I do right here, and I will, but this is Wayne Krivsky's team, not Walt Jocketty's and not mine. I just hope there is enough out there after the season that we can get to help us." Watching the Reds lose to the Cubs on Tuesday, it was clear these Reds are indeed Dusty's team. The sense of hopelessness. The shoddy fundamentals. And, yes, the "aggressive" approach at the plate, so as not to clog the bases. The Reds certainly took their hacks. And missed a lot - to the tune of 13 strikeouts, three hits and - happily for Dusty - no walks. All told, they saw 121 pitches tonight, which is bit under their average for the month of August. Here is how the Dustified Reds and the post-Dusty Cubs fare when it comes to number of pitches thrown by the opposition (month of August only, as this is labor-intensive work): Cincinnati Reds: 121, 161 (w), 137, 135, 149 (w), 103, 128 (w), 151, 110, 142, 156, 133, 127, 127 (w), 145, 136, 131. Total: 17 games, 134 pitches per game. 4-13 record. Chicago Cubs: 140 (w), 184 (w), 171, 166 (w), 173 (w), 162 (w), 204 (w), 93 (w), 160, 159 (w), 160 (w), 143 (w), 103, 145 (w), 116 (w), 139. 16 games. 151 pitches per game. 12-4 record. In home wins, the Cubs also are playing fewer offensive innings, for what it's worth.
