A Day In April: Dusty Baker, Kerry Wood & Rod Blagojevich

Gene Wojciechowski remembers watching a 2004 Reds-Cubs game at Wrigley with Rod Blagojevich (during which the governor tries to make all kinds of interesting parallels between managing a baseball team and running a state). Wojciechowski leaves the blame out, but Dusty Baker managed this game into a loss by sending Kerry Wood back out to pitch ninth inning with a 2-1 lead - even though he had already thrown 112 pitches through eight. Woody gave up a single, a walk and a sacrifice. At this point, according to Wojciechowski, the governor yells at Wood (125 pitches in), ""Here's an opportunity to suck it up, show the world how tough you are!" This is followed by an RBI sacrifice and an RBI double for 131 pitches and the loss. Then Dusty takes Woody out. Three weeks later, Kerry hit the disabled list: "The AP reports that Kerry Wood left the Tuesday's game after two innings because of tightness in his right triceps. He was taken out as a precaution, the Cubs said, and was to be evaluated again Wednesday." Way to go, Dusty! Way to be an ass, Rod!
