Mike Hampton Gets An Hour - Or 7 - Of His Life Back
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 02 December 2008
After six seasons in Atlanta highlighted by lots of injuries, Mike Hampton turned down more money from the Braves to sign with the Astros for an apparently good reason: Now that he’s finally healthy, pitcher Mike Hampton is bolting the Braves. The veteran free agent agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with Houston, taking less money than the Braves offered in order to be closer to his children in Arizona, according to two people familiar with the situation. That's nice. But is Houston really that close to Arizona? Let's assume his kids live in Phoenix, for the sake of this discussion. Houston is 1,174 miles from Phoenix - or a three-hour flight (it's 2 hours and 28 minutes back to Houston, due to winds). If he's driving, it's 16 hours and 27 minutes, according to Google: It is closer than Atlanta, which is 1,846 miles from Phoenix - or a 4 hour, 14 minute flight (3 hours and 28 minutes back). It's a 24 hour, 3 minute drive. So, by signing with the Astros for less money, Hampton cut 7 hours, 36 minutes off of his drive to Phoenix. Or about an hour off of his flight time. Also, the Astros spring training site is in Orlando, while the Braves are in Lake Buena Vista. So that's not a factor.
