What Are The Nationals Thinking?
Written by wrigleyville

So let's say you own or generally manage the Washington Nationals. You have a nice new place to play. A good-sized market. Affluent fan base. Very low expectations. But you have a lineup that is only slightly better than the '62 Mets. It's so bad your fan base gets excited about re-signing Willie Harris. Not only that, your starting rotation is made up of people named John Lannan, the very angry Scott Olsen, Shawn Hill, Collin Balester and Shairon Martis. Go ahead, click on the names. It isn't pretty. Plus, two-thirds of your outfield is made up of players intra-division rivals didn't mind trading to you. Never a good sign. With all of that going on, what are you trying to do? Acquire Mark Teixeira, of course. That would cost at least $20 million per year for eight years. Washington's entire payroll was $54 million (26th in the league) in 2008, so perhaps they have room to grow. Adding Tex's $20 million would take them to roughly $70 million-plus, assuming there is some shedding elsewhere (anyone want Nick Johnson's corpse?). But isn't that $20 million - not to mention $160 million - better spent on three or four players (and two or three starting pitchers) who would make Washington significantly better at three or four positions, rather than significantly better at just one? It probably won't happen anyway, but it's a curious spot for the Nationals to jump in the free agent market.
