Wood? Peavy? It's All About Fort Wayne
Written by wrigleyville

Reggie Hayes looks at the world and sees Fort Wayne: The Chicago “Wait ’Til Next Century” Cubs have apparently run out of options to land Padres pitcher Jake Peavy. Peavy played for the Fort Wayne Wizards way back when, so he’s kind of an adopted Fort Wayne product. It would have been nice to have him pitching for the Cubs. The Cubs have always been Fort Wayne’s adopted team, in the sense that sentimental types adopt homely yet loveable mutts. The good news for those who want Peavy to succeed is that he didn’t end up with the Cubs. Really, do you think he wants perennial arm problems, a lack of run support at critical times and the weight of trying to be the next savior? Peavy could still end up with the Cubs by midseason, the Chicago Tribune reported, if the Padres are desperate to make a move. I’d like to see Peavy pitch that close to Fort Wayne. But I don’t know that you can wish the Cubs’ baggage on anyone. Escape from Chicago Speaking of the Cubs, former closer Kerry Wood signed a two-year deal, $20 million deal with the Cleveland Indians. That’s some serious coin for a pitcher who has gold-club membership to the trainer’s room. However, he did have to pass a physical showing that (at least in December) his arm and elbow had no serious lingering problems. The acquisition of Wood should help a team that needs a quality closer, especially if manager Eric Wedge, the Fort Wayne native, is going to direct the Indians back to the playoffs and keep his job. It won’t be easy in the American League Central, but a healthy Wood could make a big difference. Rod Woodson also is from Fort Wayne. Not sure how that got left out of this story. Not to mention Bill Blass. Rob Bowen. Vaughn Dunbar. James Hardy. Chris Schenkel. Dave Thomas. Jenna Fischer (!). Carole Lombard. Shelley Long. Dick York. Philo T. Farnsworth. If you need to ask who any of those people are, well, shame on you.
