WV23 Year In Review: February
Written by wrigleyville
Saturday, 20 December 2008
February 2008 was highlighted by lingering Brian Roberts Rumors, the debut of Canadian Dempster and optimistic Mark Prior stories out of San Diego. With that, here is part two of the 12-part Wrigleyville23 year in review (part one can be found here): February 1: In an old video that swept the Internet, Chris Berman goes nuts on someone. February 3: WV23 notes that 10 presidential candidates had left the race since the Baltimore Sun reported in early December that the Chicago Cubs were "aggressively pursuing" Brian Roberts. February 4: WV23 pleads with cubs.com to stop telling us all how good Ronny Cedeno is in winter ball because, well, it doesn't translate well. February 5: Carlos Marmol says he wants to be the closer. He gets to be - 14 months later. February 7: The Cubs Blog Coast Guard is formed. That was InterWeb altering. February 9: Eleven candidates down, still no Brian Roberts. February 9: The world finally learns that the Milwaukee Brewers had picked up the option for Ned Yost for the 2009 season - but hadn't told anybody. Out of shame. Either way, he didn't even make it through the 2008 season. February 10: A Dusty Baker-signed Cubs replica road jersey is going for $39.95 on eBay. Trouble is, the jersey is worth $79.99 without Dusty's signature. February 11: Sporting News columnist Steve Greenberg guarantees the Cubs will win the World Series. Liar. February 12: Three Cubs have stuff stolen in Mesa, where the cops begin seeking a "well-known transient Mesa burglary suspect." That is an awesome compound adjective. February 12: The New York Times reports Aramis Ramirez is "dedicated entirely" to cocks when he is in the Dominican. February 13: Pitchers and catchers report, as an ice storm hits my house. Wisconsinites mock because they have the misfortune of living in such miserable weather all of the time. Whatever makes them feel better. February 13: Ryan Dempster predicts the Cubs will win the World Series. No guarantee though, so he's just wrong. February 14: The debut of Canadian Dempster! February 17: Mark Prior reports he is throwing pain free (for the Padres). Exactly on year earlier, he reported throwing pain free (for the Cubs). February 18: Journalists continue to grapple with comparing Kosuke Fukudome to other Japanese players. Apparently, his skills can't be compared to Latin, American or Canadian players. February 18: The 10-year anniversary of Harry Caray's death. February 18: Phil Rogers proclaims the Cubs "made a mistake" by not re-signing Mark Prior. If by "made a mistake" he meant "didn't piss another few million away," well, Phil is finally on to something. February 18: Brewers fans are searching for a nickname for Prince Fielder. We suggest "Fat Ass." February 18: Lou says Bob Howry is the leader to be the closer. Yikes. February 19: Aramis Ramirez declines to discuss cock. February 20: The Japanese media notes how much easier spring training is in the United States than workouts are in Japan for Kosuke Fukudome. Maybe they should have made him work out more? February 21: USA Today writes a "Mark Prior is doing well" story. He really wasn't. February 22: Millar. Dempster. Cage match. February 23: Mark DeRosa hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat. February 24: Ryan Braun declares himself a better left fielder than he was a third baseman. Insert joke here. February 24: Dusty Baker brings back "walks clog the bases." February 26: Fox Sports writer John Halpin strenuously predicts Geovany Soto will hit 20 home runs. There's only one thing he is more sure of: Wily Mo Pena would explode for 35 home runs. While Soto hit 23, Wily Mo managed two. Fifty percent! Not too shabby, John. February 27: Dusty Baker supervises spring training from atop a crapper. February 27: The Cardinals log their annual alcohol-related driving incident.
