WV23 Year In Review: March
Written by wrigleyville
Sunday, 21 December 2008
March brought us more Brian Roberts, more Mark Prior feeling well, a broken Soriano finger and Opening Day. Here's a look back at March 2008 at WV23 (parts one and two can be found here and here): March 1: Jason Marquis says he should be traded if he is not in the starting rotation. The Cubs buckle and win 97 games. March 1: Peter Angelos gives Andy MacPhail permission to trade Brian Roberts. He doesn't. March 1: The Tribune reports that Bob Brenly and Len Kasper make mix tapes for each other. March 2: Alfonso Soriano breaks a finger catching a fly ball. The Cubs expect him back in 3-5 days. WV23 is skeptical. March 3: Felix Pie injures his luggage, leading to the groundbreaking WV23 National League Central testicle study. March 3: Cubs-Orioles talks on Brian Roberts starting to "get serious." March 3: The Reds sign Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston Jr. Reds fans are not pleased. March 4: It turns out you can't come back from a broken finger in 3-5 days. March 4: Ned Yost sets the modern day record for saying "team to beat." Turns out, the Brewers were not the team to beat. March 5: The Astros pitching coach announces to the world that the Astros will be throwing more change-ups in 2008. This and a hurricane prevented the Astros from making the playoffs. March 5: Dusty Baker pretends like he cares about the health of young baseball players. Really. March 5: A Brewers blog argues that there is no way you can argue that Geovany Soto is better than Jason Kendall. Well, there is, and you would be right. March 5: WV predicts the Royals and Rays will combine to win 158 games. They exceed that. Still, not a bad prediction. March 7: The Cubs-Orioles talks on Brian Roberts are "on hold." Our long national nightmare is over. March 9: Sal Paolantonio says Brett Favre just wasn't that good the last half of his career. The state of Wisconsin revolts - until they decide they hate him, too. March 12: Ozzie Guillen gets some things off of his chest. Entertaining, as always. March 13: A 63-comment argument breaks out over the Cubs batting order. Be sure to read the whole thing. There will be a quiz. March 14: Sarge reminds us of the heartwarming story of the Cubs fan known only as Tidbit. March 15: Little Stein reminds the Tampa Bay Rays not to be uppity on the diamond, because the Yankees subsidize them through revenue sharing. March 19: IAN takes another stab at the batting order. He still wants Theriot to lead off. March 19: Kerry Wood gets a little broken, because a WV23 contributor flew too close to the sun. March 20: The Cubs are finally fed up with Peter Angelos. March 21: Lou says Soriano won't lead off again for the Cubs. Wrigleyville presciently says, "Wanna bet?" March 25: IAN throws a fit over Ryan Dempster being in the starting rotation. March 27: Mark Prior, still feeling good. March 28: The computers tell us the Cubs will win the NL Central. They play the season anyway. March 29: WV23 inexplicably live blogs the opening of the new Nationals ballpark. March 30: Members of Congress weigh in on baseball, their favorite teams and themselves - but mostly themselves. March 30: Ben Sheets complains about it being too cold at Wrigley for Opening Day. March 31: WV predicts the Cubs will win 89 games. They did - and then some. March 31: Opening Day? Not so good.
