WV23 Year In Review: May
Written by wrigleyville
Tuesday, 23 December 2008
On to May, when the Cubs helped lay the groundwork for CC's arrival in Milwaukee, Alfonso Soriano got unspeakably hot and Jim Edmonds came to town (the full WV23 Year in Review can be found here). May 1: IAN takes another crack at the batting order. May 2: Yo, Prince and Reed Johnson converge at first base, tearing ligaments in Yo's knee. Ned Yost leaves him in to pitch some more. Brewers fans blame Johnson for the injury. Makes sense. May 2: WV23 calls on Ned Yost to be fired for allowing Yo to continue pitching. A mere 137 days later, the Brewers oblige. May 2: The anti-Soriano contingent is out in full force during his slow start. It's explained by the fact he is a "latin lolly gagger" (sic). May 3: Rich Hill is sent to Iowa to think about what he's done, never to be heard from again. May 5: Ozzie Guillen loses his mind early this month. May 6: The Philly Inquirer declares Cub fandom to be inexplicable. May 7: The RTAOBP and TOOTBLAN are born. Big day. May 8: Marisa Miller as Cubs good luck charm is born. It is later proven not to work. May 10: Woody has been struggling a bit - but not as much as the competition. May 11: Mark Prior - who had been "feeling well" all spring - is not feeling well now. Nor will he feel well the rest of the year. May 12: Dusty Baker makes the same elementary error with the Reds that he did with the Cubs in 2004. Baseball genius. May 12: Brewers fans declare the Cubs to be "playing over their heads" after they lose four straight series. May 12: Mark Prior has an appointment with Dr. Andrews. May 13: The elderly halfheartedly hope for a Cubs World Series before they die. May 13: Anti-Soriano forces suggest he shouldn't even be allowed to play baseball he's so bad. May 14: Lou declines to give Felix Pie the chance to succeed he himself was given. May 15: Cubs sign Jim Edmonds, much to many people's chagrin. May 15: The Padres experience the "I don't think it's anything serious" phase of Mark Prior's recovery. May 17: It turns out Soriano isn't that bad at baseball, as he is in the midst of one of the hottest of hot streaks. May 20: Dusty Baker says his pitchers have to "cut down on pitches." Really. May 20: Paul Sullivan has no idea when the last time teammates finished 1-2 in NL Rookie of the Year balloting. Way to know the beat, Paul. May 22: A quick look back at Harry. May 26: Geremi Gonzalez is killed by lightning (not that day, but that's when it showed up here). May 27: Rick Sutcliffe tells the best Cubs story ever: He stole a base to win a case of beer for Bill Murray. May 30: Statistics show the Cubs like to score runs in the seventh inning, which surely made Harry happy.
