WV23 Year In Review: September
Written by wrigleyville

September brought us much drama, including Astros whining, a Z no-hitter, Astros whining, the Cubs clinching and more Astros whining. (The full WV23 Year In Review can be found here.) September 1: It is reported the Orioles declined to take Geovany Soto as a throw-in as part of the Sammy Sosa deal. September 2: Eric Patterson and Matt Murton air some post-trade Cub grievances. September 6: Lou Piniella and Matt Sinatro get very, very lost on the way to Cincinnati. September 7: WV23 launches the magic number watch at 16. September 9: Wherein we compare Mark DeRosa and Brian Roberts. September 9: Salomon Torres boldly predicts the Brewers will catch the Cubs. September 10: Once again, DO NOT RUN ON ALFONSO SORIANO! September 11: Ted Lilly runs over Yadier Molina - and hurts Tony LaRussa's feelings. September 11: IAN tells the world what Gustav was like. The hurricane, that is. September 11: WV23 suggests the Cubs and Astros play somewhere other than Houston, because of the coming hurricane. Oddly, this issue will come up again. September 12: WV23 suggests some other ballparks for the Cubs and Astros. This will come up again. September 13: Drayton McLane keeps insisting the games can't be played elsewhere, saying he is "standing up for our fans and our players." It has nothing to do with money, of course. WV23 wonders why the players' families are still in Houston, what with a hurricane coming. September 13: Bud Selig moves the Cubs-Astros series to Milwaukee. September 14: Carlos Zambrano no-hits the Astros. The Astros make excuses. September 15: WV declares this the best Cubs year of his lifetime. And it still is. September 15: Richard Justice declares it impossible for the Astros to win in front of Cubs fans - never mind that sweep at Wrigley earlier in the month. September 15: Ned Yost is fired. He will be missed. September 15: The Astros continue to complain after being one-hit in the second game of the series. Vito Corleone has some advice for them. September 16: WV23 takes a misty-eyed look back at its time with Ned Yost. September 16: Cubs.com doesn't know what division the Cubs are leading. September 17: Ben Sheets gets hurt in the pennant race. September 18: Eddie Vedder believes. September 18: Salomon Torres undermines his earlier prediction. September 18: September 2008 looks like September 2007 for Ryan Theriot. September 19: The Astros, still whining. September 20: An Astros fan loses his mind in a WV23 comment. We help him through the pain. September 20: Cubs clinch. September 22: WV23 starts pondering playoff matchups. September 23: Dusty manages to get playoff tickets. That's a bad omen, by the way. September 23: Astros STILL complaining. September 24: Doug Melvin declares the Brewers to be NL West champs. September 24: OSHA launches an investigation into the Brewers' treatment of its employees. September 25: Dusty Baker's love of Corey Patterson does not extend to the family. September 28: Doug Melvin now compares the Brewers' four-year record with the Cubs. Very, very strange man. September 28: Lou does his very best to get the Brewers into the playoffs. He ultimately succeeds. September 28: The Brewers set their playoff rotation. September 29: Phil Rogers - who is wrong about absolutely everything - says Cubs in 5 against the Dodgers. September 30: Ed Rendell pines for Jim Doyle's "secret sauce." I am not comfortable with that.
