And Now A Word About The Weather

Sen. John Kerry - remember him? - went on MSNBC to claim that global warming is causing "more intense" tornadoes and other kinds of storms. I don't dispute that it is getting warmer. I am not smart enough to know the cause (nor is John Kerry, I suspect). I don't even care that much, as my life is very crowded with work, the Cubs, IU basketball, recycling and Bob the Builder. But I am smart enough to recognize a political hack capitalizing on human suffering (more than 50 died in the tornadoes this week) to make a tenuous point. Consider: 1. We have had two consecutive light hurricane seasons since the Summer of Katrina, even though the experts have predicted severe seasons due to global warming. One of these years, they will be right. 2. Kerry and friends point to every extreme weather phenomenon and say, "Aha, global warming!" or "Aha, climate change!" (depending on how cold it is outside). But sometimes a hurricane is just a hurricane, and a tornado is just a tornado. 3. Speaking of tornadoes, are they really getting more severe? Of the 25 deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history, none occurred after 1955. Now, assume warning systems and perhaps construction have improved, have they improved enough to offset the growth in population (and the popularity of trailer parks)? No, I think tornadoes have always been far from a walk in the park. Especially the one in 1925 that killed 689 people. Really, pitchers and catchers can't report soon enough.
