Keith Law Chat Summary
Written by wrigleyville
Thursday, 14 February 2008
Keith Law did a lenghty chat on espn.com today. Here are the only parts relevant for Cubs fans: Kevin (Evanston, IL): What do you expect from Fukudome? I'm sure the power will be a little down, but do you think his on base percentage will transfer over? Keith Law: I think the OBP is the key for him, and yes, I think it'll transfer well. If they land Roberts too, that's an enormous OBP boost to a team that had a few OBP sinkholes in it last year. Jacob (Amherst): Top 5 NL teams for next year? I say 1. D'Backs 2. Rockies 3. Mets 4. Phillies 5. Cubs Keith Law: 1. Mets 2. Cubs 3. Snakes 4. Phillies 5. Dodgers Julius (Milwaukee, WI): How do you think the Brewers will do in 08'? I see them neck and neck with the Cubs to the end. Keith Law: I'd peg them 3-4 wins behind the Cubs right now, which is to say they'll be in the race into September. If Manny Parra can make 25 starts and keep Capuano and his 83 mph fastball out of the rotation, it will push them a little closer. Steve (Chicago, IL): Hendry as a GM - your thoughts? He seems to get bashed a ton here in Chicago but when you look back at his signings and trades, you can't point to a lot of bad ones. Keith Law: I don't agree with his contract philosophy - he just signs guys to outrageously long deals. But he's also built a division-winner, one I'm predicting will repeat. And other than Marquis, I don't know offhand of a signing that's been bad off the bat. Soriano will be a fiasco by the time it's done, but for now, it's working out. I'm hard pressed to disagree with anything Keith is saying. I think Fukudome's value will primarily be in his ability to get on base -- but the rest of the line-up is still going to have to hit him home. The Cubs should be the second best team in the NL. The Cubs are at least 3-4 games better than the Brewers (probably closer to 8-10). And Hendry is doing a good job for right now, but we'll ultimately pay a steep price on some of these contracts (particularly Soriano's).
