It's now time to start talking Cubs. And, while most days I don't have all the free time I have today at work, I'll use said free time to type incoherent ramblings about a Paul Sullivan article I happened upon. I know, I know...it's never been done before. I'm a trendsetter.

Lou seems to have all but penciled Ryan Dempster into the #3 spot in the rotation. Evidently, Rich Hill (the true #3) can't possibly pitch behind Ted Lilly because...y'know...they're the same person. Or something. It's the same kind of thinking that lends the idea behind Fukakke being a cross between Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki. Obviously, because they're all left handed. Who can't make that connection?

What really bothers me is the Dempster thing. Sure, he's an okay closer. Well, he was last year, when he converted better than 67% of his opportunities, a hot topic around these parts. First off, let me get this off my chest. I hate Ryan Dempster. The guy is an assclown, and nothing more. Who does he think he is, John Smoltz? If so, he's past disillusionment. It's been a while since he has been a starter, and even then he was only mildly successful. His best win-loss seasons were 14-10 and 15-12, back in 2000 and 2001, respectively. In his subsequent starting years from 2002-2003, he only mustered a record of 13-20 with an ERA just under 6.00. I bet Sean Marshall or Sean Gallagher can do better than that.

In Sullivan's article, Lou is quoted thusly:

"We're going to pitch them here in spring training, but this is not a year for this," manager Lou Piniella said Monday. "I hate to say that, but we've got veteran pitchers here to consider, and they're going to get every chance, first and foremost. We like Gallagher. I like Samardzija. They're good, young starters with good arms. But truthfully, not coming out of camp. I'd be lying if I said that something like that would happen."We've got seven veteran starters. They're all healthy, they're all throwing the ball well and they're all going to compete."

Throwing the ball well? After how many games? It's been a while since Calculus class, but you can't do much with zero. I'll admit that I'm comfortable with some veteran pitchers (manely Jon Lieber and Jason Marquis) fighting it out for the 5th turn in the rotation. Dempster throwing third in the rotation just makes me cringe, but since Lou seems whiskey bent and hell bound on going with it, let's hope Dempster can do his best Smoltz impersonation.
