Pat Forde Imagines You In Your Underwear
Written by wrigleyville

In an interview with the IU basketball blog Inside the Hall, ESPN.com columnist Pat Forde recognizes the impact of blogs - and then takes the typical swipes (Pat in red, WV in black):

Forde: Blogs are definitely having an effect. I welcome all attempts to modernize our industry; the good innovations will stay and the bad ones will eventually disappear. Blogs are here to stay and definitely have some positive aspects, in terms of giving people more information, more points of view, and more access to topics of interest.

Since I am an old-school newspaper guy, I do have some issues with blogs as they exist today. First, how many bloggers actually report news themselves?

Some do, but really not the point, Pat.

Do they throw rumors at the cyberwall and hope one or two stick?

Yes.

Do they simply repeat other people’s gossip?

Yes. Or make it up. Either way.

Do they know how to conduct interviews? (Props to you all for at least reaching out and asking questions.)

I'm not sure, but I think it goes something like this.

And if they don’t report news independently, where would they be without the mainstream journalists who do?

Our lives would be empty shells of nothingness wrapped in misery.

What I don’t like are blogs that exist simply to snipe at mainstream media that does the heavy lifting of reporting the news.

As opposed to the mainstream media that exists simply to snipe at people who actually do things with their lives.

Also: While I support everyone’s right to sound off on public affairs and events, I don’t find a lot of it interesting or entertaining.

Strange, but the public seems to feel the same way about newspapers (Forde came from the Louisville Courier-Journal).

Everyone wants to be Bill Simmons, but to my knowledge there’s only one him.

Pity.

Two hundred thousand bloggers cracking wise from their living in their underwear all want to be the next Simmons, but how many of them are being paid (handsomely) to do it?

I'm paid semi-handsomely to do other things, but do this for the art. And my country.
